My Happy Place

(Preface: This post has been in the making for close to a year, but I'm finally posting it now :)

There seems to be a lot of negativity on the internet lately about bloggers who are "too positive". It seems that those who want to portray a happy, seemingly perfect life are looked down upon for not showing the bad times on their blog as well. I am not trying to give you all the idea that we have the perfect life, and I seriously hope that no one would assume we are angelic beings! I am human, and so is my family. (I know, I know, this comes as a shock to many)
I have bad days and I have really bad days. I argue with my husband, yell at my kids, have piles of laundry on the floor of my room and dirty dishes in my sink. I'm not trying to portray a "fake" life, only write about our happy times. If something happens to one of my kids or my husband (God forbid), the last thing I want to do is come back here and read all of my complaining about the bad days. In that case, I'll want to remember the good times and forget the bad.
That being said, even if nothing happens to a member of my family, I still want to remember the good times. No, everything I write isn't always 100% happy, but it won't be used to complain about my current daily annoyances. I am blessed beyond measure and I just cannot bring myself to gripe about such small things when I have it so good!

One is feeding him, the other is tickling his neck. What a life.

I want to publicly state the purpose of this blog, so that all who read it will understand where I'm coming from.
1) To keep my family updated with pictures and stories from our lives.
(This is the reason that I started this blog, and it will always remain my #1 reason to update since we live so far apart.)
2) To have an online document of our lives to look back on someday.
I hope that someday my children will take the time to look back and read about their lives, and even now, I look back on posts from a few years ago to see what was going on and what the kids were doing at the time.
3) To encourage anyone else who may happen to stop by and read.
I love my readers, and while you may get a little bored with the amount of pictures and details of my children's lives that are posted, I hope that you find encouragement at some point. I've made so many great friends through blogging. You guys are awesome!
For being 3, he's pretty good at feeding his little brother.

This blog will never be a place to judge other Christian people on what or how they write or portray their lives. This world has enough negativity in it and I refuse to write posts that will drag people down and leave them feeling discouraged (unless, of course, it is about a real life tragedy asking for prayer). If you think I'm trying to give you the idea that I eat rainbows and poop butterflies, you are highly mistaken. For my own sake, this blog is my happy place to remember the amazing life God has given me and the wonderful memories made along the way.

Sushi and Chocolate

Last week I found myself in a rare predicament.

I had over an hour in between appointments with nothing going on that I needed to burn.

Without children.

What a rare predicament indeed! As a Mom I weighed my options carefully. 2 hours without kids, away from the house?

I pulled into my grocery store and walked right to the sushi bar. There I sampled and purchased a spicy crab roll. After that I bought a Reese's Chocolate Peanut butter pumpkin.
(At Easter, they are eggs, and Christmas, trees. The Eggs are the best, but pumpkins are a close second. In case you were wondering.)

And then, I did something that I don't think I've ever done before. I went out into the very quiet parking lot, got in my car, rolled down the window and opened my sushi. And there I sat in silence, feeling the cool breeze, eating my sushi and reading blogs on my phone. No little mouths to feed, no one crying, no snotty noses to wipe.

For an entire hour.

After the blissful crab roll was savored, (or devoured? I was starving) I opened my "pumpkin" and ate it. Peanut butter and chocolate. What a combination. Girls best friend if you ask me.

After that I felt like a new woman. When I saw my kids I gave them huge hugs and kisses and my hubby an extra kiss (or many extra kisses... ;) seeing he was the one who was taking care of them during my heavenly moments alone.

I am learning to enjoy the little things. Sushi and Chocolate in a parked car, the breeze coming through the window, and silence are definitely little things that gave me a boost and made me a much better woman. I took this picture because I was so happy and wanted to remember this moment forever.....
Have you had any little moments lately? If you don't look for them they can be easy to miss, so look for them...every day! You will be much better for it-I promise!

Lord, I Need to Know you

Right before Christmas last year, I hurt my back. I started chiropractic appointments right away and went to several, including massage. I had been to the chiropractor many times before and gotten help. This time something was different and my husband wanted me to find out what. I had been dealing with severe pain for about 4 months at this point.
I went to our family Doctor who took x-rays, gave me some anti-inflamatorie's and referred me to a spine specialist. When the x-rays came back fine, I moved on to the Spine Rehabilitation Center. After about 5 minutes of making me bend in all different directions and seeing my response when he did certain things, he was pretty positive I had a herniated disk. He immediately started me on therapy, gave me a stronger anti-inflammatory and a strong pain killer.
The medicine did wonders. I felt like I could live again. I knew that it was only masking the problem until I really "got better" but it felt so good in the mean time. My drugs made me extremely sick and drowsy but I didn't care. I was continuing my therapy and my therapist was pleased with my results. At this point my hips were so visibly shifted that I had to wear clothes to hide it because I was embarrassed. It literally looked like I had no hip on one side! Within a week the therapy had shifted me back. One more week and we could start more exercises!
Then, a stupid mistake. Brookie left some shoes on the second stair. I was quickly moving my way down the stairs, saw the shoes, and jumped from the 3rd stair to the floor.
Only the third stair!
I felt my back jolt and knew I shouldn't have done that.
That was a Sunday evening and I couldn't go to church. For the next week I was in agony. My sister got in on Tuesday and ran my house and took care of my kids while I hobbled around and layed on my back a lot. This was a turning point for me. Something had changed. I knew I couldn't live my life like this. My Dr. sent me for an MRI and my therapist couldn't even work on me because I was so bad. The results were a severe herniated disk and he wanted me to meet with a surgeon to discuss my options.
By Saturday, I was very depressed. I couldn't go on like this. For 6 months I had been living in agony. My house wasn't being taken care of and I could hardly dress myself. My husband was shaving my legs for me because I couldn't bend to do it. It was an awful day. For a few nights I had been sleeping on the floor in very awkward positions trying to get some relief so I could sleep. This night I couldn't find relief anywhere I laid. I wandered around the house, trying laying in different positions in different rooms, beds and couches. My whole body was jittery because I was so tense. My sweet husband, with me and serving me through the past 6 months, followed me around the house even though I told him to please go to bed. In my state of mind I'm sure he was afraid I would kill myself! :) I knew something had to change and I was pretty sure it was going to be surgery.
At some point during the night (we were up and down until almost 4am), my husband very sweetly told me something that really changed my life.
He said, "babe, I think it would help if you changed your perspective on this. Think of the other good things in your life that you have to be thankful for."
I knew he was right. God forbid one of my children have to go through what I did---but it was me, and I was grateful for that. I started to pray and cry to God, thanking him for all he had given me in life. I really broke down and decided that I was going to change my heart and my spirit.
Despite the awful night, we dragged ourselves out of bed to go to church that morning. Songs that I had hardly paid attention to now meant so much to me. Songs about how good God is, and Heaven to look forward to. I cried a lot in church that day, sitting on my pew in pain.
Before the preaching, my sister-in-law who has the voice of an angel got up to sing. She sang a song about wanting to know God and then I knew. All this time I wasn't looking for spiritual answers, just physical ones. This was the first hard trial (and nothing compared to most of you) I had ever gone through. People who go through things like this draw closer to God and learn so much, something I had been jealous of my whole life.
Now it was my turn. It was my turn to get to know Jesus in a way I never had before. I began to grow excited. The Holy Spirit knows what he's doing, and after she got done singing, Pastor preached a message about knowing God. Coincidence? Absolutely not!
I had officially changed my perspective. Not only had this been a physically and emotionally dark time in my life, it was a spiritual one too. The next morning I sat out in the sunshine reading my Bible and praising Jesus. He spoke to me so much that day. Since then I've been devouring God's Word and learning so much like never before. Because for the first time in my life I needed to "KNOW GOD." I had read my Bible since I knew how to read, but never like this.
Throughout that week, my back started to feel better. I met with a surgeon that week to discuss my options. Epidural or cortisone shot, which had a 70% chance of healing me. Or surgery, which was the last and final option. 2 weeks ago I would have scheduled it. Now my back was feeling much better and he said we would wait and he would see me back in a few weeks.

All this time, my sisters were here and I was able to rest for a full month. By the time I saw him again, the month was over. I am so excited to tell you that I felt like a new woman. The only thing I felt was nagging lower back pain. Not the excruciating, sharp disk pain that I had dealt with for over 6 months. The words he spoke to me brought tears to my eyes.

"Once that sciatica (pinched nerve and herniated disk) pain goes away, there is a very high chance that you will never deal with it again. All your life you will deal with lower back pain flareups, but once the sciatica pain leaves it doesn't come back."
You should have seen my smile. Even though the pain was going away I was so scared for it to come back. Now I was being told it wouldn't!

As I left, he touched my shoulder and said, "I hope I never see you again. Have a good life!"

Weeks before I could hardly walk down that hallway. Now I felt like I was flying. I called my husband and family on the way home rejoicing. I felt like I could start life all over again. I was a new woman with a new future.

Do I still have to be careful? Yes.
Do I deal with back pain? Every day.
Is my right lower leg and foot still numb? Yes, and probably will be for a few more years or the rest of my life. The good news is I'm regaining strength in my right leg so that weakness isn't as noticeable.

I will deal with this numbness for the rest of my life if I have to while I snuggle close to my Lord and know him like I never have before. It's a nagging little reminder of what I've been through and how far I've come. God has healed me. Not only physically but spiritually as well. And I couldn't be more happy.

A Mommy Survey

Hollie tagged me to do this survey. I cheated and removed some questions as it was very long and left in the ones I thought meant more to me! :)

How long have you been a Mom? 20 months tomorrow!

How old were you when you became a Mom? 20 years old

How many children call you Mommy? One (although she calls me "Jenna" a lot, too :)

Girl? Boy? or both? One precious little girl!

How did you find out you were pregnant? My sister-in-law convinced me that I was, so I took a test in the middle of the day. Since it was so early it took about 20 minutes to show up a tiny second pink line

What were your reactions? Totally shocked, tears, going crazy inside.

Who did you tell first? My Sis-in-law! She lived next door and was waiting for me to tell her, so I ran over screaming, "IT WAS POSITIVE!!!!!" She gave me a big hug and I just kept saying, "I can't believe it, oh my word, I can't believe it".

Was abortion an option for you? You mean murder? No, it was NEVER and option.

Did you have morning sickness? I was very nauseous all the time for the first 3 months but never threw up.

What did you crave? Guacamole for a few days, other than that I would have sporadic cravings, like a krispy kreme doughnut or a hot dog. Then I would eat it and be fine. :)

Who/what irritated you the most? Haha! I was pretty emotional but can't think of one thing imparticular.

Favorite place to buy maternity clothes? Thrift stores! :) They have the good brands for cheap and always had an awesome selection. (They have the BEST thrift stores here)

Did you have a baby shower? Yes, 2 of them! One in NY and one here after Brookie was born.

How did you know when it was time to go to hospital? I was induced, so I wasn't in labor yet.

Who drove you to the hospital? Nate, with my Mommy in the back seat.

How long were you in labor? 6 hours, from the time my doctor broke my water to the time she was in my arms!

Was it natural or C-section? Natural-- I was very blessed to have no complications.

Did you take medicine to ease the pain? I was very determined not to, and I stuck with it! I had it totally drug free and would definitely do it again that way.

Time of birth? 3:56pm

Who was in the room when baby was born? My husband, so loving and supportive, my Mom ( Could not have done it without her!), my AMAZING doctor and nurse (Erin! I still remember her, she was incredible) some technicians, and a black man whom I did not know.

Weight? 6 pounds, 13 ounces

Length? 20.5 inches

Any hair? yes, brown hair!

How much weight did you gain during pregnancy? 40 pounds :(

Was baby early or late? 8 days early

What's your favorite thing about being a Mom? Someone to be with all day long when I'm home! The new things that she does every day, the way she makes me laugh and the way she loves me so much.

How did you come up with the name? I loved the name Brooke but wanted it to be a little longer. So I added "Lynne" to the end of Brooke. We named her middle name, Nicole, after my Mom. Thus, Brooklynne Nicole!

One thing you will not give up just because you're a mom? Partying and staying up late! :) I keep Brooke on a very good schedule when we are at home, but I REFUSE to leave somewhere early just because my child has to go to bed.

When the kid is napping, you are: WORKING OUT!! IT'S ME TIME! On the computer, reading my Bible, cleaning.

When did baby start sleeping through the night? 5 weeks old.

What’s your favorite activity with baby? Everything, really. I love reading to her, I love dancing and laughing with her (yes, we are quite the sight dancing together :) I LOVE when she sucks her thumb and lays on my shoulder. Being a Mom is the best thing in the world!

My Wedding :)

This was a fun survey I found about my wedding. I know that most of you already know the details, but I thought I would share anyway!

What time of year did you get married? Summer, and the weather was perfect!

What did the groomsmen wear? Black tuxes, silver pin-striped vests and silver ties

Color of bridesmaid dresses? French Blue (like a deep baby blue)

How may bridesmaids, including maid/matron of honor? 7, including 2 junior bridesmaids ( I have a ton of sisters and best friends! :)

Are you still friends with all your bridesmaids? Oh yes. We are all still best friends, and I don't think that anything will ever change that.

Location for reception: Fireman's Hall (It really was nice!)

Band, DJ or other? None. I sang to Nate though!

Something unique about your wedding? We had sparklers that everyone held at the end of the reception and we walked through them. It was so much fun, everyone loved it!

Did anything go wrong? My dad and I recorded "Butterfly Kisses" to play during a slide show at the reception, but the sound guys weren't very prepared and you couldn't hear it at all, which was really disappointing because it was a really special song to us and we worked really hard on it! (Can you tell I'm still bitter? Just Kidding :)

Where did you go on your honeymoon? Orlando, Florida

Name one thing looking back you would of changed? We would have relaxed a little bit more on our honeymoon. We went to 3 Disney Parks, Universal Studio's, Arabian Knights and did tons of shopping. It was a blast though! And we ate like pigs the whole time! :)

My Back

Today was my second chiropractor appointment and it went very well
All during my pregnancy I had horrible lower back pain, sometimes so excruciating I could hardly move. Afterwards, it got a little better of course, but has always been there nagging me when I would get out of bed. I have a horrible habit of cracking it a lot myself just to get some relief ( I also crack my fingers and neck...but we'll save that for another time :)
Why I waited 15 months to finally go for an adjustment was because of insurance deductibles, but I had finally had enough and it was traveling down into the back of my thighs. I couldn't sit for very long without having to stand because I get pins and needles in the backs of my legs.
One of my best friends, Veronica, works at a clinic so I went for an adjustment almost 2 weeks ago. They took x-rays and we said that we would look them over at the next appointment.
The adjustment did wonders for me, and I had relief for about 8 days but then it started coming back. I went again today and looked over my x-rays with Collette, the chiropractor. She says that my pelvic and hips are out of whack (makes sense after you push a baby through there that it would be messed up!). Also, my neck has no curve at all; she will be showing me exercises to do for my neck ,and to strengthen my core.
She says that I will heal and I have to go weekly until I do. Last week the left side of my neck didn't move, but this time it eventually did which she was happy about. I'm glad that she will be able to work it all out, because I'm 21 years old for crying out loud! I shouldn't have to feel like this!
I'm just happy to finally be getting some relief from this annoying pain in my lower back, and hoping that I will not have such bad pain during my next pregnancy!
